An Essex-based council is seeking an experienced Interim Legal Support and Deputy Monitoring Officer to join their team on a temporary basis.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a fully qualified solicitor or barrister with a current practicing certificate and substantial experience in local government, including serving as a Monitoring Officer.
The successful candidate will provide essential support to the Acting Monitoring Officer and offer technical legal expertise, particularly in governance and report writing. This role involves ensuring the council's democratic processes and decision-making systems are legally sound and compliant with the relevant legislation and the Council's Constitution.
The postholder will ensure the council operates within the law and will provide timely advice on legal changes that may impact the organization. They will deliver high-quality legal counsel to the council, its members, and officers on various legal and procedural issues.
Working alongside the Acting Monitoring Officer, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Chief Executive and s151 Officer to enhance governance across the council. This role will involve addressing corporate governance, legal, procedural, or constitutional matters, and fostering effective cooperation throughout the organization, including with elected members, to support the council's strategic priorities.

We are looking for someone who is an effective communicator, capable of ensuring compliance and governance standards are met while promoting collaboration, knowledge sharing, and best practices across the council.
The expectation is that the successful candidate will be on-site at least two days per week.
